Humpback Whale Behaviors: The Bubble Trail
Sometimes observing one of the simplest of humpback whale behaviors can have the greatest impact. This is an amazing, minimalist scene!
What we have in this video is “just” a male humpback whale, an escort, blowing a beautiful bubble trail next to the female he’s trying to impress. Nothing else to it, just a bubble trail…
But it builds so beautifully, from a trickle to a sustained stream, that in an inexplicable way it is like seeing a sound. It is almost like watching a musical note build to a crescendo.
Time alters. We call it “whale-time” here on the Silver Bank. The whole behavior is only a few seconds long but seems like minutes. Watching feels like a half-minute meditation before – poof! – it’s over…
